Building A Yurt In Winter

Building a yurt may not be at the top of your desirability rankings in the dead of winter, but, with proper planning, a quality structure can be pre-fabricated, then assembled on site in a matter of a few days. While flexible-wall, tarpaulin yurts are the most popular structures in North America, it is the solid-wall yurt that provides the greatest protection, for the lowest cost in cooler and colder climates. Soft-wall yurts offer the primary advantage of being able to be assembled, then disassembled and relocated with relative we, while solid structures do not lend themselves well to relocation. The question then becomes, if you intend to relocate frequently, why not buy a tent or RV?

Our solid-wall yurt will stand for years, and has proven itself, already, to be a weather-tight, comfortable home. Although, due to our wanderlust and travelling nature in winter, we do not spent the deepest Part of winter in our home, it has endured the coldest, snowiest and windiest days of our Manitoba, Canada winters. If minus-40 is still too warm for you, then a yurt, of any variety, may not be a viable living solution!

By using 2-foot panels, assembled on an 8-degree angle to each other, we have constructed a 600-square foot (that’s incorrect: hard to have square feet in a round building!) facility. Similarly, one could build a yurt in a variety of diameters (12, 16, 24, 32) with relative simplicity.

What to Do in a Plumbing Emergency

A plumbing calamity may seem like a prime reason to panic, but this could just make the situation worse and cause more damage to occur while you wonder what to do. Before you even call emergency plumbers there are a few things you must remember to do.

One of the major plumbing disasters to occur at home is that of a burst pipe and, while you will need to contact a plumber in this event, there are some other important steps you should take first. Begin by switching off your entire water system at the mains by turning off the stop cocks – also known as stop valves. These are traditionally located beneath the sink. This should stop any more liquid from pouring into your home, causing damage that could see you having to replace your soft furnishings, calling the plasterers or completely redecorating.

Should switching off the stop cock fail to do the trick, you should go around your house and turn on all of your cold taps; be sure to leave your hot taps in the off position. This will help to drain out the system quickly and stop any leaks.

Thread count refers to the number of threads in a square inch of the fabric, measuring both warp and weft (lengthwise and widthwise). People are increasingly aware that the higher the thread count, the higher quality the fabric, but this is only partly true.

If there is a high concentration of threads woven together the threads have to be fine, and this generally makes the fabric softer which is why people look for a high number. However, you can find a fabric with a lower thread count that actually feels more luxurious than one with a higher count for reasons that will become apparent later.

Water Intrusion

Here’s a sore subject for many this winter and spring – water leaking into the home! It can be frustrating, sometimes devastating, costly, and always irritating. Last winter, in particular, was wetter than usual, which only makes it worse. How can we stop it?

I can only refer to that ancient saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. It’s a good idea to inspect the exterior of your house every fall, before the rain or snow starts. Even the tiniest pinhole cracks will let water in during a driving rainstorm, so be thorough. Cracked caulking must be re-covered. Cracked or rotting siding should be replaced. (Be sure to check the building paper beneath, as this is the final defense against moisture.) Inspect the windows for anyplace water may enter. Usually it’s nothing a case of acrylic caulk won’t cure.

If you don’t want to climb up on the roof, have a knowledgeable friend or builder inspect the shingles, flashing and roof cement for signs of aging or damage. Just because it didn’t leak last winter doesn’t mean it’s still okay. Wind, rain, hail and snow can do a lot of damage in a season. Skylights are notorious for leaking, especially if they were installed after the house was built. They should be resealed every year. Henry roof cement is great for patching on a small scale. Large jobs should be performed by a licensed roofing contractor. They will provide a written guarantee, on installation and materials.
